What Really Is Important Anyway?

October 16, 2007

This is Dave..

I usually watch Malia get inspired and write these blog posts. Today is different.

I feel somewhat compelled to share some of my feelings that have been stirring in me for the last several days, perhaps crack the door open a bit to be personal.

To set the stage a little bit let me say that Malia and I have been touched by several things in the last week.

First, there has been the passing of Tom Beal’s mom. Both Malia and I have lost parents, both of hers, me..my dad. The loss at the time you are going through it feels so huge. We were actually there when our parents died.

We don’t talk about all of this very much, however when one of the members of our IM community like Tom Beal is willing to share his pain and what he is going through, it just makes all of us take a moment and appreciate the vulnerability and openness. The outpouring of well wishes to Tom made Malia and I appreciate the true value system of the majority of the IM and motivational community.

Another person that Malia and I don’t even know, Jason Oman recently had a brain aneurysm, and had surgery yesterday. We had e-mails come from two of our friends Ken McArthur and Simon Leung that shared the news of this health challenge. Jason is only 34 and the doctors say that he only has a 30% chance of a completely restored life. This is shocking and saddening that such a young man has been struck down. It makes you think. It makes you reflect. It compelled Malia and I to pray for Jason’s FULL recovery and comfort for his friends and family.

Recently, on a personal note… my 20 year old daughter went to the hospital for 7 days. It was unexpected, and though it wasn’t life threatening, it was not expected and threw us all for a loop. She is out of the hospital recovering now and we are so grateful for that.

The point I am making is this.

We all can get caught up in the frenzy of building websites, marketing, our jobs, making money and the everyday mundane things that capture our attention and we may even complain about..

But…. when you see the outpouring of peoples genuine concern, the love and prayers, the openness and sincere warmth that is demonstrated when one of our family members, or even people we just don’t know, but are a part of our community, is hurting, it makes you proud that you are a part of that community.

Malia and I are truly grateful to be a part of such a fine group of people. God Bless each and every one of you!
